Former State Department planning chief Dr. Anne-Marie Slaughter to speak on national security
Dr. Anne-Marie Slaughter will present “The Big Picture: Beyond Hot Spots and Crises in Our Interconnected World?” on March 15. Dr. Slaughter served as director of policy planning for the United States Department of State from 2009 to 2011; the Policy Planning Staff provides independent policy analysis and advice on global trends and strategy to the Secretary of State."Dr. Slaughter has been a leading advocate of restructuring U.S. national security strategy to better respond to future threats," said Amy Clothier Gaudion, executive editor of the Penn State Journal of Law and International Affairs, the organization sponsoring the event.
Dr. Slaughter is the editor or author of six books, including A New World Order(2004) and The Idea That Is America: Keeping Faith with Our Values in a Dangerous World (2007). Dr. Slaughter was also the convener and academic co-chair, with Professor John Ikenberry, of the Princeton Project on National Security, a multi-year research project aimed at developing a new, bipartisan national security strategy for the United States.
At the State Department, Dr. Slaughter led the Quadrennial Diplomacy and Development Review, for which she received the Department's highest honor, the Secretary's Distinguished Service Award. Dr. Slaughter has received a Meritorious Honor Award from USAID and a Joint Civilian Service Commendation Award from the Supreme Allied Commander for Europe.

Prior to her government service, Dr. Slaughter was dean of the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. She appears regularly on CNN, the BBC, NPR, PBS, and was named a Top 100 Global Thinker by Foreign Policy Magazine in 2009, 2010, and 2011. Dr. Slaughter is now a professor of politics and international affairs at Princeton University. She earned an A.B. from Princeton University, a J.D. from Harvard Law School, and a master's and doctorate in philosophy from Oxford University.
Dr. Slaughter's talk is part of a year-long lecture series on the evolving national security narrative sponsored by the Penn State Journal of Law and International Affairs. The series is designed to identify and understand the threats, responses, and accountability mechanisms that will define the future national security configuration, and to influence policymakers toward a coherent, effective strategy.
Founded in 2011, the Penn State Journal of Law and International Affairs is a joint publication of the Penn State Dickinson School of Law and School of International Affairs. Collaborating across disciplines, law and international affairs students edit essays about a variety of topics in private and international law, international relations, comparative law and politics, geography, economics, and more.
