Alan Feng, an economist with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), will be giving a special guest lecture, "Innovation in Finance: Opportunities and Risks," on Friday, January 18 in the Lewis Katz Building. All students, faculty, and staff are welcome to attend.

Over the past few years, significant innovations have emerged in the financial sector, including blockchain technology, peer-to-peer lending, mobile payment, and robo-advisors among many others. On the one hand, these new technologies and business models have the potential to transform the whole financial system and improve economic efficiency going forward. For example, Fintech such as mobile payment has improved financial inclusion in Africa and Asia. On the other hand, concerns about financial stability, consumer protection, and privacy issues arise. Financial regulators around the world have started to closely monitor and, in some cases, regulate Fintech activities. What is Fintech? Why are technology and finance naturally tied together? Based on what we know from existing studies and public information, this seminar will provide an overview of innovation in finance and discuss the opportunity and risk aspects of this newly emerging and evolving area.

Alan Feng has a Ph.D. in economics from Princeton University and a Bachelor of Science in computer science and mathematics from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). He has been a visiting researcher at Hong Kong Monetary Authority and a visiting scholar at the National Development and Reform Commission of China.
