Free screening of Michael Moore's "Where To Invade Next"

Penn State’s Center for Global Studies (CGS) will be screening Where to Invade Next directed by Michael Moore, on Thursday, March 23rd, at the State Theatre from 7:00 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. The film screening will be followed by a discussion moderated by CGS Director and School of International Affairs Professor Sophia McClennen and Peter Buckland, Academic Programs Fellow at Penn State’s Sustainability Institute. McClennen is one of the nation’s leading experts on the connections between satire, democracy, and the public sphere and blogs regularly for Salon. Buckland works on academic and outreach programming at Penn State’s Sustainability Institute and is an affiliate faculty in Educational Theory and Policy. This event is free and open to the public.

Moore is an American documentary filmmaker and author. A few of his works include Fahrenheit 9/11, Bowling for Columbine, Sicko, and Capitalism: A Love Story. The success of his first film Roger and Me launched his career as the best-known controversial documentarian. Where to Invade Next follows Moore’s journey of “invading” Europe after telling the Pentagon to “stand down” from wars because Americans are losing more than they gain. Moore aims to learn about the benefits of school, gourmet lunches, and the no homework policy. Furthermore, he examines the positive effects of reasonable working hours, a generous eight-week vacation time and five-month maternity leave in Italy. Additionally, he is shocked to find that decriminalizing drugs results in less drug use and violence. By gaining new insight about the systems in Europe, Moore hopes to bring these lessons back to improve the lives of Americans.
