Current SIA faculty include former U.S. and international diplomats as well as renowned scholars across a variety of academic fields.

Faculty have held positions in the U.S. Department of State, the State Department Policy Planning Staff, the Foreign Ministry of Italy, the CIA, the National Security Council, the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency, and the National Counterterrorism Center.

The research work of SIA faculty spans the realms of great power rivalry, economic development, strategic behavior of economic actors and the impact of institutions, food security, agriculture and food systems, energy security, sustainability and the environmental impact of market actors, democracy, and nonviolent activism and human rights.

Faculty have conducted research around the world, including Australia, Botswana, the European Union, Kenya, Namibia, Nigeria, Peru, South Africa, and Uganda. SIA faculty have carried out research for the World Bank, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, the African Development Bank, the South African Reserve Bank, and other government institutions and international organizations.

SIA faculty are journal editors, authors of many books and of countless journal articles and policy reports. They provide analysis and commentary for numerous popular media outlets.

Our faculty have been Fulbright Scholars and have received grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Social Science Research Council, the Department of Education, the National Science Foundation, the Tinker Foundation, the Open Philanthropy Project, and the South African National Research Foundation.

SIA students also have the opportunity to learn from distinguished faculty from across Penn State, including Smeal College of Business, Penn State Dickinson Law, the Bellisario College of Communications, the College of Agricultural Sciences, the College of Information Sciences and Technology, the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences, and the Eberly College of Science.
